Tides on the Piscataqua

Portsmouth sits on a short, deep, ferociously tidal river. Knowing roughly where the tide is will change what you can do on any given afternoon.

Why it matters here

The river drains a large estuary through a narrow gap

Great Bay empties and refills twice a day through the Piscataqua, and the whole exchange squeezes past downtown Portsmouth. The result is a current strong enough that tugs work the ship movements around it and paddlers plan their day around slack water. There is roughly a nine-foot range between high and low water in this harbour — enough to change the shoreline you are looking at.

Planning

How much the tide actually affects your plans

For most visitors the honest answer is 'not much, except for two things'. Those two things are worth checking.

How strongly the tide affects common Portsmouth activities
ActivityTide mattersWhat to know
Harbour cruises and sailingModeratelyOperators schedule around the current, not around you. The gangway angle at the dock changes noticeably between high and low water — relevant if anyone in your group has limited mobility.
Kayaking and paddleboardingCriticallyThe Piscataqua is among the fastest tidal rivers on the east coast. Paddle the sheltered back channels near slack water; the main stem on a running tide is for experienced paddlers with a plan.
Tidepooling and beachcombingCriticallyEverything worth seeing is exposed in the two hours either side of low water. At high tide there is nothing to look at.
Waterfront walking and photographySlightlyLow water exposes mudflats, pilings and old wharf structure — better for detail. High water gives you the postcard.
Riverside diningBarelyThe view changes character but not quality. Worth knowing if you were hoping to watch boats move.
