Neighborhood
Market Square
The civic and commercial hinge of the downtown: a compact open space where the principal streets converge under a landmark steeple.
Identity
Market Square is the room the city gathers in. It reads as a European square rather than a New England green: buildings hold the edges, the steeple anchors the sightline, and the street pattern radiates outward toward the river and the residential blocks.
Documented context
Historical context
The square sits at the historic centre of the settlement, where meeting house, market and commerce collected. Successive fires and rebuilding campaigns in the early nineteenth century left the brick blocks that define the space today. Specific dates and attributions should be confirmed against National Register documentation before publication.

How it looks
Architectural character
Three- and four-storey brick commercial blocks with regular window rhythms, granite lintels and storefronts inserted at ground level. The steeple provides the vertical accent; everything else is deliberately horizontal and continuous.
Editorial recommendation
Best reasons to visit
Our judgement, not a verified claim.
- The best single view of how the downtown is organised
- Coffee, bookshops and street-level browsing within one block
- The natural starting point for the architecture walk
- Evening light on the brick façades from the west
On foot
A suggested walk
- 01
Begin in the square
Stand with the steeple behind you and read the building line — note where later storefronts were cut into older brick.
- 02
Walk one block toward the river
The commercial grain loosens and the ground drops; warehouses replace shopfronts.
- 03
Return through the side lanes
Narrow service alleys show the back-of-house history of the block.
Editorial recommendation
Food and coffee
- — Morning coffee before the square fills
- — Counter lunch within a two-minute walk
- — Late drink in a brick-vaulted room off the square
